Daniel 9:8 (ESV)

8 To us, O LORD, belongs open shame, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against you.

The reason for the shame is that “we have sinned against you.” This is not a shame that belongs only to a part of the people. Daniel makes it clear that it is a shame toward God that belongs to all the people. Shame also on the part of the leaders of the people. Shame that is also connected with the forefathers. No one can avoid being ashamed before God and confessing guilt. The following applies to everyone: Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight (Psalm 51:4). Whoever does not include himself in this does not know himself, nor does he know the Lord.
