Zion is the city of God—Jerusalem where the temple is. Its inhabitants themselves have already begun to mourn: how have we perished, how great is our shame! Because of their sins and their consequences, the inhabitants of Jerusalem are deeply ashamed before God. And rightly so!
19 For a sound of wailing is heard from Zion: ‘How we are ruined! We are utterly shamed, because we have left the land, because they have cast down our dwellings.’”
