1. Genesis 4:1 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What relationship does the reference to “his wife” imply?

Genesis 4:1 (ESV)

1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD.”

See Genesis 2:24. The conclusion, which the writer of Genesis connects to the creation of a woman for Adam (they are of one body), is expressed in sexual intercourse. It has a place in the marriage of a man to his wife. There is a sense of ownership (his wife - according to the biblical meaning not only of the husband in relation to his wife, but also vice versa, 1 Corinthians 7:1–4). It refers to an institution that connects men and women in this way. There is something that is above the individual and is empowered to make these kinds of connections: a form of government. This kind of (intimate) community is preceded by a legal bond, established by a government.
