1. Genesis 4:7 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What does it mean that if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door?

Genesis 4:7 (ESV)

7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.”

How dangerous is sin! You put yourself in incredible danger if you deviate from God’s teaching, commandments. There is a power that lurks like a roaring lion (1 Peter 5:8), like the serpent in paradise (Cain will know the history of his parents). If you open the door for Satan, he will step inside and pry the door open further. Things will go from bad to worse (see James 1:14–15). You have damaged the relationship between you and God through your sin—no matter the type of sin (God makes a general statement). Thus you are on your part breaking the bond of the covenant with God, life-threatening. Therefore, hate sin, distance yourself as far as possible from all that is not good and beautiful (Jude 1:23; Romans 12:2). The root of evil is disturbance of the relationship with God. Then man goes completely astray and commits terrible deeds.
