1. Mark 1:12–13 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why does the Spirit lead Jesus into the wilderness?

Mark 1:12–13 (ESV)

12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.

Jesus was driven into the wilderness as the scapegoat on the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16:1–34). He bears the sin of all the people. He is tested by Satan in the wilderness to see if he can really accomplish this work (with the sins on his shoulders to the cross). He passes this test. This is evident from the fact that the wild animals also do him no harm and that angels serve him. He is indeed the promised Messiah!
