What is the symbolism of frankincense?

Leviticus 2:1 (ESV)

1 “When anyone brings a grain offering as an offering to the LORD, his offering shall be of fine flour. He shall pour oil on it and put frankincense on it

Frankincense (lᵉḇōnāh) was an aromatic gum that covered any unpleasant aromas of the offering in the fire. It was often used for ritual activities in the temple (Leviticus 24:7; Exodus 30:34). It is also likely that frankincense was used by Aaron when entering the Holy of Holies (Leviticus 16:12). The symbolism of frankincense reflects that the wrath of God has been appeased.
