1. Acts 8:32–35 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Who is the suffering servant of the Lord in Isaiah 53?

Acts 8:32–35 (ESV)

32 Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this: “Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he opens not his mouth.

Isaiah 53:1–12 is the last prophecy in the series of four about the servant of the Lord (Isaiah 42:1–7; Isaiah 49:1–7; Isaiah 50:4–9; Isaiah 52:13 – 53:12). The nation of Israel has indeed been seen in this servant (as e.g., becomes clear from a different translation of the Septuagint of Isaiah 42:1). And yet, it is especially about a person who represents the people and defends the people: the chosen, anointed, and beloved servant of God, the Christ! Via Christ, God looks to heal his people. At the same time, God’s plan of salvation even goes beyond that. The Servant has a message for the whole world: all nations may share in this salvation! Peter also speaks about the Servant Jesus in Acts 3:13, Acts 3:26 (see also Acts 4:27, and Acts 4:30).
