Song of Solomon 3:5 (ESV)

5 I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, by the gazelles or the does of the field, that you not stir up or awaken love until it pleases.

The daughters of Jerusalem need to know this very well. Especially when they look forward to love and marriage. They should not be looking at Solomon with his thousand wives. Solomon could not give himself to all those thousand wives with his whole heart. You should not look at the stars, the celebrities of the world, who so easily switch from one handsome wife or husband to another. The unmarried need to know that true love involves a woman and a man growing closer before marriage. The longer they grow together the more they will do all things together. When the love remains strong the way to marriage is open. Physical union in marriage may then be a beautiful consequence of this growing in unity. When you truly love the other, you will want to be with them and remain united.

This is also how it should be in our relationship with Christ. Anyone who loves Christ will not allow circumstances to rule his life. Rather be poor, persecuted, set back, yet filled with love for Christ than to be without him. Let Christ be all and everything to us! His love is so great and glorious!
