Studying the Word and blessing

Ezra 7:6 (ESV)

6 this Ezra went up from Babylonia. He was a scribe skilled in the Law of Moses that the LORD, the God of Israel, had given, and the king granted him all that he asked, for the hand of the LORD his God was on him.

There is no way that Ezra said to himself, I think I am going to make myself an expert on the law of God, the Word of God, because then I will get the attention of the king of Persia. And he will send me back with another wave of Jews returning and give us all this stuff. No way! Because that is not how you come to God's Word to study it. You study God's Word for its own sake. God is not a means to an end. God is the end in itself. But because he is the God that he is, he blesses us with smaller blessings, worldly blessings, besides the supreme blessing of being in communion with him.1
