It is only after Ezra learns the Word of God and commits to live it, that he ends up teaching it. Actually, this is a really good prescription for preachers. John Owen once said that he was determined not to ever preach on any subject or matter in Scripture, until he had first felt and experienced the power of it for himself. And so here is Ezra, teaching the Word, but he is teaching the Word because he is studying the Word; and because he is studying the Word he is doing the Word. He is a model to the people of God. One commentator makes this observation: we have the secret of Ezra's impact.1
