Song of Solomon 1:3 (ESV)

3 your anointing oils are fragrant; your name is oil poured out; therefore virgins love you.

The wife reveals that it is just wonderful for her to be with her husband. She desires so much for him to be with her. When she smells his fragrance, all is good, for she knows that he is close to her. She compares this scent to a kind of perfume. It is a certain oil that has a strong scent. To her, his fragrance is something that smells pleasant and familiar.

She says of him, Your name is oil poured out; therefore virgins love you. These words show that this man is full of love in the world. He truly lives in love with his wife and also makes it clear to those around him that true love rules his life. It is for this very reason that the young unmarried women love him. He is a very likable man, a man who radiates love and warmth. That is what makes him attractive. It is not that he is so handsome, or that he acts in such a popular way. It is not that he is trying to get attention from the girls or flirt with them. The secret of his life is that he truly wants to live with the Lord. The fruits of the Spirit are visible in his life. It is the Spirit who changes people who seek their life with Christ, in the love of Christ. In this person's life we will see evidence of what we read in Galatians 5:22–24: the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
