1. Judges 11:40 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What is ironic about the permanent remembrance of the daughter?

Judges 11:40 (ESV)

40 that the daughters of Israel went year by year to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in the year.

Though Jephthah’s daughter was sacrificed by her father, the author makes sure to mention that of the two of them, she is the one permanently remembered, by way of an annual festival in her honour. We may apply the words of Jesus to this unnamed woman: What she has done will be told in memory of her (Mark 14:9).1
