At first reading we are inclined to assume that Peter is simply referring to the gospel (good news) that the saints of Asia Minor heard. In fact, the pronoun “this” recalls the concluding words of the quote from Isaiah 40: “The word of the Lord remains forever.” In other words, the phrase “this word” draws attention to the word’s imperishable nature. That is significant because Peter’s readers are offspring (seed) of this word and therefore by virtue of being born again themselves now also imperishable, and thus able to inherit an imperishable inheritance (1 Peter 1:4).
