Other passages of Scripture make plain that there are many other vices that can challenge the lives of Christians (Galatians 5:19–21). This specific list is constructed with the instruction of 1 Peter 1:22 in mind. Brotherly love cannot be “sincere” and you cannot “love another earnestly from a pure heart” if you allow space in your heart for any or all of this list. In fact, giving space in your heart to any of these vices will prevent drinking the pure milk that is needed for growth in the sort of love that must characterize those born again of imperishable seed.
