  2. Exposition

Is there any significance in the order of these five vices?

1 Peter 2:1 (ESV)

1 So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.

The first vice is the broadest, denoting anything evil or bad or injurious in your heart toward a brother. Not putting it away but instead covering up that evil implies deceit which in turn leads to hypocritical behaviour toward the brother. The result can be jealousy of what the brother has and words that degrade. In other words, these five vices are all of one piece, growing from one root.
