Though children get weaned off a diet of (mother’s) milk, Christians are never weaned from God’s kind of milk. That is evident from the pronoun Peter has used throughout this paragraph: “you,” which refers to the elect exiles of the Dispersion. Though we do not know how old they were spiritually (i.e., how long ago they were born again), the depth of theology in this letter makes it clear that they were distinctly not infants or scarcely literate in the faith. Yet they too needed to make a point of craving for God’s pure milk.
