It is interesting to observe that when Paul writes about Jesus’ work, he emphasizes not so much Jesus’ suffering as his death (Romans 5:6, Romans 5:8; Romans 14:15; 1 Corinthians 15:3; 2 Corinthians 5:14; etc.). That makes Peter’s emphasis on Jesus’ suffering noteworthy. (Of course, Jesus’ suffering and death cannot be separated (Luke 22:15; Luke 24:26, Luke 24:46). As Peter is talking about unjust suffering it is this element of Jesus’ life that provides the example his readers need to follow.
21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.
