Like Psalm 57:1–11, Psalm 34 originates from the time when David was in hiding in the cave of Adullam. The name Abimelech most probably served as a title for the Philistine kings (as Pharaoh is the title of Egyptian kings) and here it probably refers to Achish, king of Gath. David had just escaped being executed by this king and had fled to the cave to hide.
The psalm is an acrostic psalm, meaning that each verse begins with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet in alphabetical order.
1 I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
