James 1:19 (ESV)

19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;

In order to listen, you have to be able to listen. You have to have ears to hear, otherwise how can you hear?...But you also need the desire to hear; you have to hunger to hear. I am amazed how children can at times not hear certain things that are clearly spoken with a loud voice, and yet they can quickly hear something said in a whisper. Is it because they cannot hear or because they desire to hear what they should not hear and are not willing to hear what they should hear? Is that only the problem with children? No, it is all of us. Let every man be quick to hear, hungering to hear from God.1
