The rushing of the Spirit should be understood in the light of Judges, where the Spirit comes upon individual judges in order to strengthen them for a particular task (see e.g., Judges 14:6, Judges 14:19; Judges 15:14; see also Numbers 11:16–18, Numbers 11:25). In this case, the Spirit will equip Saul to serve as king, specifically for the task of leadership.1 The Spirit will give Saul power that must be exercised in obedience.2 Throughout 1 and 2 Samuel the Spirit of the Lord is used only in connection with God’s anointed.3
