1. Matthew 11:25 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What is significant about Jesus addressing God as “Father”?

Matthew 11:25 (ESV)

25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children;

Five times in this passage God is addressed as Father. This indicates the eternal and intimate relation and bond between the Father and the Son. At the same time, Jesus also calls the Father the Lord of heaven and earth here. God is the Creator of heaven and earth (see e.g., Acts 17:24; Revelation 14:7). He has authority over heaven and earth. Jesus shows how he wants to obediently honour the God of heaven and earth who has a special plan for the redemption of his creation.
