Truly, he puts down an exclamation mark: no one can ransom another. You could think of slavery here, but this is about something bigger and deeper; it is about what God can do and does. What God requests for a life, no one can pay. In fact, this is a confession: life is from God.
Even when you are wealthy, it does not enable you to pay for someone’s life. Therefore, do not fear (Psalm 49:5). The opposite is also true: with lots of money you are still unable to give someone life or let someone keep his/her life.
