1. Malachi 3:6 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What is the purpose of the initial word “for” in this verse?

Malachi 3:6 (ESV)

6 “For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.

Although the word for often looks backward to what preceded, it can also look forward to what follows. In this instance, the word looks forward to what follows. By using the word for the Lord explains to Israel that his unchanging faithfulness to Israel is the reason they have not been consumed by his wrath. This becomes clear if the two phrases are reversed: You, O children of Jacob are not consumed (by my wrath) for I the Lord do not change.
