Although the word for
often looks backward to what preceded, it can also look forward to what follows. In this instance, the word looks forward to what follows. By using the word for
the Lord explains to Israel that his unchanging faithfulness to Israel is the reason they have not been consumed by his wrath. This becomes clear if the two phrases are reversed: You, O children of Jacob are not consumed (by my wrath) for I the Lord do not change.
