1. Judges 14:16 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What does her use of “my people” indicate?

Judges 14:16 (ESV)

16 And Samson’s wife wept over him and said, “You only hate me; you do not love me. You have put a riddle to my people, and you have not told me what it is.” And he said to her, “Behold, I have not told my father nor my mother, and shall I tell you?”

Samson’s wife still has her loyalties and allegiance with the Philistines. Her terminology highlights once again the fact of a distinction between Israel and the Philistines. See also the narrator’s mention of her people in Judges 14:17.

What does Samson’s response to his wife reveal? Samson says, Behold, I have not told my father nor my mother. By this he reveals that he for his part has not quite cut the apron strings yet. He apparently sees no need to be more open with her than with his parents, which runs counter to Genesis 2:24.1 It is an awful situation for a marriage, where husband and wife belong to two different peoples with opposed loyalties.
