If we love the unlovely, if we love the unpopular, if we do not favour people—that is the gospel. Jesus loved those who were not highly valued by his culture, for example, women as we see in Luke. His love and respect for women who were not highly valued in their culture, children, Gentiles, the poor, sinners, tax collectors. James says we are deceived if we show favouritism to certain people.1
