Jonathan did not complete his report with what took place regarding Solomon, but he reported that which made it clear that King David was behind these events. The report of Jonathan made it clear that the events went forward with the approval of the old king.
Concerning this, the first thing Jonathan said is that David’s servants came to him to congratulate
him. This is the way that the ESV translated the word “lebarek,” and they are correct. It was a greeting that contained some sort of blessing. Jonathan repeated the words of the congratulatory blessing. May your God make the name of Solomon more famous than yours, and make his throne greater than your throne.
David’s response to the blessing was also reported by Jonathan. He bowed himself on the bed. This response can be seen as what I might call a non-verbal Amen.
47 Moreover, the king’s servants came to congratulate our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make the name of Solomon more famous than yours, and make his throne greater than your throne.’ And the king bowed himself on the bed.
