The dimensions of the Promised Land, here given, are massive: essentially all of Palestine and Syria are included, which was an area larger than Israel ever actually possessed. Yet this was all included in the promise to Abraham, in Genesis 15:18–21. To this land Israel was called to turn; they were commanded to leave behind Mount Horeb and set their face toward this new destination.
7 Turn and take your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites and to all their neighbors in the Arabah, in the hill country and in the lowland and in the Negeb and by the seacoast, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.
