What does it mean for God to reveal his Son in Paul?

Galatians 1:16 (ESV)

16 was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with anyone;

Paul stresses the inward and intensely personal character of God’s revelation to him on the road to Damascus.1 Jesus Christ is the Son, unique in an ontological sense; he shares the nature of the Father.2 For God to reveal his Son in Paul refers to the fact that Paul came to realize that Jesus is the Messiah and Son of God.3 Along with the reality that Jesus is the Christ, the gospel of justification by faith was also revealed to Paul during this meeting.4
