To what does "every eye" refer?

Revelation 1:7 (ESV)

7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.

The phrase every eye refers to the totality of humanity, irrespective of where or when one lives. Christ Jesus, after all, exalted as he is, is Lord of all time and all space.
