Why does Paul talk about slavery?

Galatians 4:7 (ESV)

7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

Paul weaves together the idea of becoming an adopted son, having previously been a slave, together with the concept of an heir coming of age.1 He mentions slavery in particular to highlight the fact that believers are no longer subject to old covenant law.
