Psalm 1:1–6 (ESV)

1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;

Psalm 1 can be divided in three parts:

  1. Psalm 1:1–3: the way of the righteous. Verses 1 and 2 give an indication of the lifestyle of the righteous. First it mentions what he will not do and next what he delights in. The third verse proclaims the blessedness of the righteous; he is compared with a tree planted by streams of water.

  2. Psalm 1:4–5: the way of the wicked. These verses contrast the lifestyle of the wicked and its outcome with that of the righteous.

  3. Psalm 1:6: God’s involvement in both ways. This verse proclaims the reason for the different outcomes of the two ways.
