Paul did not always write the letters himself with his own hand. He often made use of an amanuensis, a person who wrote down what Paul told him to say (see Romans 16:22). 1 In most cases, however, he would conclude a letter by taking the pen from the amanuensis to write the final words in his own hand (1 Corinthians 16:21; Colossians 4:18; 2 Thessalonians 3:17; Philemon 1:19). 2 This was likely done to help believers know that the letter that they received was genuine and came from him. 3
