Earlier in his sermon, Jesus mentioned the fact that those who follow him and submit to his teaching are likely to face persecution (Matthew 5:10–12). 1 Christians must learn to see their persecutors not as enemies to be killed, but as people to be loved, people for whom they must pray. Jesus exemplified this attitude when he prayed for those who were nailing him to the cross (Luke 23:34).
