  2. Application

One God in three persons: What does Matthew 5:38-48 reveal about what God does in my place and on my behalf (Son)?

Matthew 5:38–48 (ESV)

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’

  • God the Son is the King who fulfills all that was promised in Scripture. He has come to perfectly obey God’s law, thereby meriting eternal life in God’s presence. He shares his perfect righteousness with all those who have faith in him so that they can also belong to the kingdom and enjoy the privileges of kingdom citizens. Through his death, he also bore the curses that the law promised for lawbreakers, giving his life in the place of sinners who deserve judgment.

  • With regard to retaliation, though he was reviled, Jesus did not revile in turn. He was willing to suffer evils and wrongs throughout his life on earth for the sake of doing good to all people.

  • With regard to enemies, Jesus gave his life for those who considered him to be their enemy. Many of those who shouted for his death would later be converted and honour him as the Messiah (Acts 2:1–47).
