Matthew 5:17–20 (ESV)

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

  • God the Son is the King who fulfills all that was promised in Scripture. He has come to perfectly obey God’s law, thereby meriting eternal life in God’s presence. He shares his perfect righteousness with all those who have faith in him, so that they can also belong to the kingdom and enjoy the privileges of kingdom citizens. Through his death, he also bore the curses that the law promised for lawbreakers, giving his life in the place of sinners who deserve judgment.
