What does it mean to be blessed?

Matthew 5:3 (ESV)

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

To be blessed is to be the happy recipient of divine favour or approval. 1When man blesses God, man approves of God. He praises God for who he is. When God blesses man, he cares for him. 2 Under the old covenant, this approval was often connected with material prosperity (see Deuteronomy 28:1–14).
