God promises mercy to those who show mercy (Matthew 6:14–15; James 2:13). 1 One who is not merciful typically does not think that he is in need for mercy. This attitude reveals the content of someone’s heart and shows that he/she does not truly belong to the kingdom (Matthew 18:21–35). 2 In contrast, the Christian forgives and shows mercy because he/she knows that he has been forgiven and continually needs God’s forgiveness (Matthew 6:14; cf. Matthew 18:21–35; Ephesians 4:32; Colossians 3:13). 3
