Sermon goal for Matthew 5:21–26

Matthew 5:21–26 (ESV)

21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’

Since Jesus is teaching on the correct interpretation and application of the sixth commandment, your aim should be to make it clear what this commandment entails. You must show how we all fall short of what God requires and thus are deserving of judgment. You should also emphasize the fact that Jesus came to save murderers, and that he is going to change us by his Spirit so that we become people who love rather than a people who hate. Finally, you should encourage God’s people to seek reconciliation with those whom they have wronged. Emphasize the priority that reconciliation should have in family and church relationships.
