Sermon goal for Matthew 5:27-32

Matthew 5:27–32 (ESV)

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’

Since Jesus is teaching on the correct interpretation and application of the seventh commandment, your aim should be to make it clear what this commandment entails. You need to explain how lustful thoughts are sinful and wicked, and lie at the heart of adulterous actions. You also need to make it clear that Christians are not free to divorce and remarry as they please. Emphasize the fact that Jesus came to save adulterers, and that he is going to change us by his Spirit so that we become people who fight against our sinful desires rather than indulging them. Finally, you should encourage God’s people to make clear and deliberate plans to avoid temptation and to reign in their thoughts.
