Hazor was the most important city in the north, situated about ten miles (sixteen kilometres) north of the Sea of Galilee. It was most probably also the largest city in Canaan at the time of the conquest, and it seems to have governed trade to the north where it is mentioned in texts as far away as cities on the Euphrates River.1 Modern excavations have shown that the city was on a site of two hundred acres with a population estimate of 30-40,000 people.2
