1. Matthew 24:47 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What does it mean for the master to put the faithful and wise servant in charge of all his possessions?

Matthew 24:47 (ESV)

47 Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions.

The responsibilities of the faithful and wise servant are increased when he is found to be doing the will of the master at his return (Matthew 24:46). While some commentators understand that faithful disciples will be given authority in God’s church in the here and now (see Matthew 25:10, Matthew 25:21b, Matthew 25:23b),1 the context is the return of the master and not present life. Eschatological blessings for faithful disciples are the focus (see Matthew 13:43; Matthew 16:27; Matthew 19:28–29; Matthew 25:21, Matthew 25:23, Matthew 25:29, Matthew 25:34).2
