Job 34:9 (ESV)

9 For he has said, ‘It profits a man nothing that he should take delight in God.’

Elihu gives an example of Job’s scornful claims. However, he misquotes Job. According to Job, it is the wicked who says that there is no reward in serving God (Job 21:14–16). Job only went so far as to deny that God always and universally punishes evil and rewards uprightness (Job 9:22; Job 21:7–15; Job 24:1–12; Job 30:26).
