Scripture gives us many examples of the grief that foolish children cause their parents. Think for example of Cain, Esau, Noah’s son Ham, Samuel’s sons, David’s sons Amnon and Absalom, and Hezekiah’s son Manasseh. This proverb gives a double encouragement: it encourages young people to bring joy to their parents by living wisely; and it encourages parents to ensure that they are raising their children in the fear of the Lord.
There is almost no greater work than bringing up children in the fear of the Lord. The family forms the foundation of society. Therefore, it is no wonder that the main part of Proverbs (Proverbs 10:1 – 22:29) starts off with this very theme.
1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.
