What are these seven spirits of God?

Revelation 3:1 (ESV)

1 “And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. “‘I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead.

We had met these “seven spirits” already in Revelation 1:4 as party to the extending of grace and peace to the seven churches in Asia Minor. We are not to picture in our minds seven independent spirits (like so many disconnected stones) in the hand of Jesus Christ. We’re instead to bear in mind that the number “seven” is a full number throughout Scripture, indicating the fullness and completeness of the Spirit, just as the “seven” churches of Asia represented the totality of all the churches of all times and places. Upon his ascension into heaven, Christ received the Holy Spirit from the Father (Acts 2:33). Christ’s Holy Spirit is not limited to serving one church at a time; instead, the number “seven” indicates that he serves all “seven” churches (= all Christ’s churches everywhere) all the time.
