1. Revelation 3:9 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Where does the clause "I have loved you" come from?

Revelation 3:9 (ESV)

9 Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and they will learn that I have loved you.

Isaiah had spoken of the Lord delivering his people from their exile on grounds that “you are precious in my eyes…and I love you” (Isaiah 43:4). These Jews would acknowledge that the Lord had delivered the Christian church in Philadelphia precisely because she was the object of his love. See also Romans 8:32.
