This section is thus defined by two opposites: death and life. Paul’s writing about life and death, however, is dominated by Jesus Christ. Christ is mentioned six times in this passage. According to Pesch the apostle developed a theology of death
in this part of his letter,1 but this is difficult to accept. Death as such is not discussed. The apostle’s concern is rather the fellowship with Christ as something that is experienced both in life and in death.2
