What does "hard pressed" communicate?

Philippians 1:23 (ESV)

23 I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better.

Paul is, as it were, “pressed” between two possibilities, with both having a hold on him. The verb translated as “pressed” is also used, among other things, to describe a city under siege, surrounded by an army (Luke 19:43). In this way the apostle feels constrained from two sides.1
