The name of the Lord—Yahweh—is a name that speaks of God’s presence among his people. This name has to bring to mind the years from the ten plagues in Egypt until the entry into the Promised Land. It was a time when the Lord showed his presence and care for his people with many powerful deeds. The plagues, the opening of the Red Sea, the provision of food and water in the desert, the thunder and shaking on Mount Sinai, the military victories as the people entered Canaan—all of these moments are contained in the name “Yahweh.”
Thus the name of the Lord is his fame, and this, as this proverb says, is for us a “strong tower.” To believe and to pray is to hide in this name! We have an even richer name to know God by, a name which also contains a whole history. We can call him “Father.” In this name we should hear the sound of the salvation that we have received in Jesus Christ. The “name” of God represents everything that God has done for us, from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22. This is a strong tower for believers to run in and be safe forever.
10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.
