1. Ezra 2:68 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Is it a sign of disapproval that the author says that "some" of the heads of the families made offerings?

Ezra 2:68 (ESV)

68 Some of the heads of families, when they came to the house of the LORD that is in Jerusalem, made freewill offerings for the house of God, to erect it on its site.

Some commentators draw attention to the words some suggesting that this is a negative assessment of the giving. Only some of the people gave, not all of the people. However, this interpretation is incorrect.1 This verse wants to emphasize the positive nature of the giving by drawing attention to the fact that it is a freewill offering, which is always seen positively in the Bible. People gave large gifts, and this shows a unity of purpose and desire.2
