Proverbs 20:3 (ESV)

3 It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife, but every fool will be quarreling.

In this world, people with big mouths often receive much honour and attention. But when Jesus was on earth, he refused to become involved in matters that lay outside his calling. Even though he is the Lord of creation and will come back to judge all people, he told the brother who was fighting for his inheritance, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” He had the wisdom to stay out of fights that God did not “appoint” him to fight.

“Am I called to become involved in this?” is a question that can help us to stay out of many fights. Throughout the Bible, we are commanded to live in peace with everyone, as far as we can (e.g., Matthew 5:9; Romans 12:18; 2 Timothy 2:24).
